ABOUT:
‘A Queenly Dream’ was inspired by the book ‘Through the Looking Glass, and what Alice found there’ by Lewis Carroll.
I read the whole book before I started this painting, so I could reacquaint myself with it, being that it is a little different to Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, and different again to the movie.
In the beginning of the story, Alice is playing with her 2 kittens - a black one and a white one and after she awakens from her dream-journey in which she is sitting with the red and white queens on the other side of the looking glass she is holding one of the kittens and suddenly wonders if the black kitten was the Red Queen and the white kitten was the White Queen.
I loved this concept of dream state intermingling with the waking world and so I painted the combination of the two in this painting, along with other aspects of the fun and quirky tale. Carroll wrote this book about Alice in reference to her transition from child to adult and so her Queenly status is a sort of symbol of this.
