Clean, beautiful air
Essential to all life
Filled with the creatures who fly
Home to the sky, the planets, the stars
A pathway to the greater universe
This painting was first inspired by the tales of Matariki.
There are many legends of Matariki and the 6 sisters Te ono o Matariki. Perhaps the most popular one centres around the star cluster Pleiades, which represents the Whaea (mother) and her six daughters: Tupu-ā nuku, Tupu-ā rangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī, Waitā and Ururangi.
In Polynesian tradition, Matariki, the goddess and her six children continue to help humans by appearing when it is time to harvest the labours of hand or heart. In Hawaii this happens in mid-late November and there are special rituals performed to celebrate the appearance of Pleiades in the sky. At this time all war is forbidden, as it is a time of peace and harmony.
Some say, to carry on this peacefulness and harmony into your own life, you can carry 7 stars in your pocket or wallet. These stars can be as simple as drawing them on paper and cutting them out.
In New Zealand, this Māori tradition is celebrated around mid-year (beginning of winter) with the sighting of the seven sisters (Pleiades) and new moon. This marks the beginning of the new year. Some of the rituals involved with Matariki celebrations in NZ, are house cleaning, lighting a fire, spending time with whānau (family), making stars, and listening to traditional stories focused around creation and renewal. This is a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future.
This painting represents the peace, harmony and renewal that Matariki embodies and is also a reminder of the sacred and essential element that we take for granted: Air.
This Goddess and her warrior animals are guardians of this precious element. They fiercely protect it for the future of life on this planet and all others.
The butterflies represent metamorphosis & renewal: something we can manifest into our lives at any time. Rainbows symbolise transformation with the seven colours of the rainbow connecting with the seven stars of Matariki.
