Water Guardians - original painting
There is so much beautiful life to behold in our oceans, lakes and rivers.
An essential element, water gives life, nurtures life and sustains life.
The goddess of the sea in Greek Mythology is Amphitrite – wife of the god Poseidon and one of the daughters of Nereus and Doris (the daughter of Oceanus).
Poseidon chose Amphitrite as his wife, but she initially refused to marry him and ran away to Atlas, only to be sent back to Poseidon on a dolphin. The dolphin then became a constellation as a reward from Poseidon. Amphitrite did become his wife eventually and has often been depicted in illustrations and paintings driving a chariot drawn by sea horses and other fantastical sea creatures.
This sea goddess and her fellow water guardians are inspired from the stories of Amphitrite as she lived among and protected life within the waters.
As we are embarking on a world where caring for the waters is of imminent urgency, this painting is here to inspire us to leave the life that is still in the oceans and lakes – to stop taking, and rather to appreciate, respect and care for the beautiful eco-system that keeps our planet (and us) alive and well.
