Earth Guardians - original painting
Leaves, trees, flowers
Creation and evolution of life
The land upon which we live.
As a child I was always inspired by indigenous myths and legends and how they often revolved around the story of the Earth: the land, the seas and the skies. The people in the stories have a deep connection to the land and all that it encompasses.
These legends are more than stories – they are truth to indigenous peoples all around the world, as the land has meaning beyond ownership. The people are the guardians of the land. The land is part of who they are and is connected to their culture, history and identity. The earth is an ecosystem of water, plants, animals, skies and the spirit world – it is both physical and supernatural. It is life.
If we are not from a culture that embraces this philosophy, it is still a part of who we are. We have just forgotten, or perhaps we haven’t been reminded yet.
This painting was initially inspired by the legend of Atira, the Native America Goddess of the earth and sacred Mother of every living creature.
The Earth Guardians are the stewards of the land. They protect, nurture and only take what is needed. They are painted to remind us all of our connection to one another and to all living things, and to help us realise what we are and always have been: an integral part of the planet we live on.
