Dakota the Sacred Godmother - original painting
Dakota is a mother figure and protector of the animals of North America. She is part of my ever-growing ‘Godmother’ painting series.
In ancient culture and traditions of Native Americans, animals are believed to be spirit guides that walk through different stages of life with a person, teaching and guiding them and in some instances, protecting them. Animals are also symbolic of qualities and attributes to strive for. Here is a brief overview of the symbolism within the animals in this painting:
Bear: Courage, physical strength, and leadership
Buffalo: sacred life, great strength, abundance and gratitude
Eagle: divine spirit, creation and freedom
Moose: balance and longevity
Squirrel: planning and home
Wolf: direction, leadership and protection
Owl: wisdom, intuition, messenger and mystery. Owls are very respected in Native American culture and thought to symbolise the souls of the departed.
